Ambassador Marie-Antoinette Rose Quatre is the incoming CEO of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). She was formerly the High Commissioner for the Republic of Seychelles to the Southern African Region, SADC and COMESA. She speaks about her appointment and what does this leadership position mean to women in Africa. The APRM is a mutually agreed instrument voluntarily acceded to by the member states of the African Union as a self-monitoring mechanism. It was set up in March 2003. It is there to ensure that policies and practices of participating Member States conform to the agreed political, economic and corporate governance values, codes and standards contained in the African Union Declaration on Democracy, Political, Economic and Corporate Governance.

In this episode we discuss the role of an Election Commission in governance structures with election democracy consultant and Founding Chief Electoral Officer of the Election Commission of South Africa, Professor Mandla Mchunu.The year 2024 is a global election year. More voters than ever in history will be heading to the polls. Voters in at least 17 out of 54 African countries should be casting their ballots to elect either their leader or representative in parliament.Professor Mandla Mchunu is an experienced election democracy consultant and practitioner who has worked across Africa mainly. He was the Deputy Secretary of the Adjudication Secretariat of the first multi-racial election of South Africa in 1994 when the African National Congress won a 63 percent share of the vote, and the late Nelson Mandela, as leader of the ANC, became the country's first Black President.Professor Mchunu is the Founding Chief Electoral Officer of the current Electoral Commission of South Africa when it was established in 1997. He has also participated in global Election Observer Missions.

Once the lush tropical islands of the Caribbean were a playground for pirates and a hub for the slave trade, but these are days bygone. Since their independence Caribbean nations have been active in embracing democracy. Professor Cynthia Barrow-Giles from the University of West Indies, Cave Hill campus joins us from the island of Barbados to discuss the state of democracy in the Caribbean. Apart from her scholarly work, the professor has participated in a number of Election Monitoring and Expert Groups in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. She also served as a member of the St. Lucia Constitution Reform Commission from 2005 until 2011.

The Founder and Chief Executive of Nekton Oliver Steeds OBE, joins us on this podcast to explain Ocean Rising, an initiative which seeks to deepen the relationship that people have with the ocean. It was launched by Nekton and the Schmidt Ocean Institute. The ocean covers approximately 71% of the earth’s surface. It is home to millions of species of which only a fraction has been discovered. Coastal nations depend on the ocean for their livelihood and economy. Yet in general we know very little about our ocean.
