In this episode we discuss the role of an Election Commission in governance structures with election democracy consultant and Founding Chief Electoral Officer of the Election Commission of South Africa, Professor Mandla Mchunu.
The year 2024 is a global election year. More voters than ever in history will be heading to the polls. Voters in at least 17 out of 54 African countries should be casting their ballots to elect either their leader or representative in parliament.
Professor Mandla Mchunu is an experienced election democracy consultant and practitioner who has worked across Africa mainly. He was the Deputy Secretary of the Adjudication Secretariat of the first multi-racial election of South Africa in 1994 when the African National Congress won a 63 percent share of the vote, and the late Nelson Mandela, as leader of the ANC, became the country's first Black President.
Professor Mchunu is the Founding Chief Electoral Officer of the current Electoral Commission of South Africa when it was established in 1997. He has also participated in global Election Observer Missions.
